Oklahoma wins opioids case against Johnson & Johnson (ASL – 8.26.19)

And this story just happened a few hours ago.

An Oklahoma judge ordered pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson to pay $572 million for its role in the state’s opioid crisis.

The judge said the opioid crisis has ravaged the state of Oklahoma.

Health officials say the misuse of and addiction to opioids including prescription painkiller, heroin and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, has
led to a public health emergency nationwide.

According to the CDC, more than 702,000 people have died from a drug overdose from 1999 to 2017.

Oklahoma was one of a dozen states suing opioid drugmakers.

The case in Oklahoma was the first to reach a trial.

Johnson & Johnson maintained it did nothing wrong.
