Today jury selection begins in the case of a former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger who shot and killed a man in his own apartment a year ago.

According to police, last September Guyger shot and killed twenty-six-year-old Botham Jean, an unarmed black man, after entering his apartment believing it was her own.

Guyger was off-duty at the time of the shooting.

According to officials, while she still was in uniform, she parked her car in her apartment complex and enter what she believed was her apartment.

She didn’t realize she was on the wrong floor.

The door was slightly open as she tried to use her key.

The room was almost completely dark as she entered and Guyger says she saw a large silhouette and believed there was an intruder.

The officer pulled her gun and shot Jean twice, hitting him in the chest.

She called 911 and says she didn’t realize until she turned on the lights and was asked for her address that she was in the wrong apartment.

Jean later died in the hospital.

On September 24, Guyger was fired from the Dallas Police Department.

Guyger’s defense team has requested a change of venue for the trial, citing media bias.

However earlier this week the judge ruled that the decision would not be made on that request until it was determined whether a jury could be selected in Dallas County.
