The COVID-19 pandemic still has a tight grip on the US, infecting people in all 50 states.

But officials say African-Americans are more susceptible to the virus.

The nation’s Surgeon General made the announcement Tuesday after early data pointed out the trend.

The nation’s top infectious disease expert says underlying health conditions often make African-Americans more vulnerable to coronavirus.

In Michigan, 14% of the population is black but they make up 41% of coronavirus deaths.

Over in Illinois, 15% of the population is African-American or black but they account for 43% of deaths.

Louisiana is 32% black but they have seen about 70% of the deaths in that state.

The federal government is not tracking coronavirus cases by demographic groups.

But some experts say it should start doing that.

On Tuesday during the White House’s coronavirus task force news briefing, President Trump said his administration is doing everything to address the challenge.
