June 2 is “Blackout Tuesday” also know as #TheShowMustBePaused.
According to the initiative’s website, it is a day of observance to the “long-standing racism and inequality” that exists in response to the murders of black citizens at the hands of police.
The initiative was created by two black women who are music executives and is being pushed by leaders and artists in the industry.
The website says the goal of the initiative is to hold the music industry at large, which benefits from black art, accountable.
The initiative hopes to do this by encouraging music leaders and artists to shutter normal business operations Tuesday.
They say business cannot be conducted as usual “without regard for black lives.”
Artists like the Rolling Stones, Quincy Jones and Billie Eilish have said they will observe the day.
On Instagram Jones encouraged his followers to join in recognizing the day by “disconnecting from work” and reconnecting with their communities.
A few major record labels are also expected to participate.
