Now that British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell has been arrested on federal charges of conspiring to sexually abuse minors with deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein, her case is being watched around the world because of its connections to the rich, powerful and royal.
Many people are digging into her past but not coming up with much.
Even though pictures of her keep reappearing in images associated with the Epstein scandal, Maxwell has been very elusive.
Ghislaine is the daughter of the media Baron Robert Maxwell.
She grew up in their vast country estate in the Oxfordshire countryside.
After her father’s mysterious death at sea in 1991 – he fell from his luxury yacht named in his daughter’s honor – Maxwell reportedly moved to New York to start a new life.
From there investigators are trying to figure out how did she go from being a highly educated and connected figure in British high society to being accused of being involved in an underage sex trafficking ring?
Epstein’s accusers claim Maxwell was sourcing teenage girls for him and directing them to have sex with Epstein and his friends.
Virginia Roberts Giuffre alleges Maxwell recruited her when she was 15 years old and kept her as a teenage sex slave for Epstein.
In her court deposition, Maxwell said Giuffre’s claims are untrue.
The case was settled in 2017.
Maxwell hadn’t been seen in public since August of last year when she was spotted in Los Angeles.
She didn’t respond to numerous requests for comments after Epstein was found dead in a prison cell last year.
Now that she’s been charged with enticement of minors, prosecutors and alleged victims alike hope to finally hear a full version of events from the person most closely associated with Epstein and his alleged crimes.
