More than 1,700 people have signed a petition urging Trader Joe’s to change the labeling of some of its international food products.
The petition was started by California high school senior two weeks ago.
The student says the grocery store chain labels some of his ethnic food with modifications to the word “Joe” that perpetuates harmful stereotypes.
For example the grocery stores labels for its Chinese products is “Trader Mings,” for its Middle Eastern products “Arabian Joe” and for its Mexican products “Trader Jose.”
The grocery store chain says it has already been in the process of updating ordering labels and replacing any variations with the same name “Trader Joe’s.”
