Our ASL class takes on the Mannequin Challenge to tell the story of Thomas Gallaudet. Here are the sequences of the story in English:
1) In Hartford, Connecticut in 1814, Thomas Gallaudet met a Deaf girl named Alice Cogswell. Her siblings didn’t play with her, and she was alone. Thomas felt bad and had an idea. He wrote H-A-T in the dirt and pointed to his hat. Then he wanted to teach Deaf children. 2) Because there were no existing Deaf education in America, he decided to sail to England to learn methods. 2) Thomas met teachers from the Braidwood oral school and was dissatisfied with the results. 3) While in England, Thomas met Abbe Sicard, the founder of the Deaf School in Paris. 4) Thomas went to Paris and the Deaf school there. 5) He met a Deaf teacher named Laurent Clerc. 6) Thomas asked Laurent Clerc to move to America with him. 7) Thomas and Laurent established the American School for the Deaf (ASD) in Hartford, Connecticut in 1817. 8) Today, we thank and love both Thomas Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc for American Sign Language (ASL).
