According to a new report by the CDC, fentanyl is now considered the deadliest drug in the United States.

In 2017, the latest year for which complete data is available, more than 70,000 people died from drug overdoses.

Opioids such as fentanyl and heroin represented about 68 percent of those deaths.

Fentanyl is the drug most commonly associated with fatal overdoses, accounting for 38.9 percent of all drug overdose deaths in 2017.

Heroine was associated with 22.8 percent of all fatal overdoses followed by cocaine 21.3 percent.

However the study also showed drug overdoses were divided along regional lines.
