There have been a rash of fatal aviation accidents around the world in the past three days that claimed the lives of dozens of people.
On Saturday morning, an 8-passenger plane crashed just after takeoff from Lafayette regional airport near New Orleans.
The plane was headed to Atlanta for the LSU ñ Oklahoma college football game.
Witnesses say the plane was flying low to the ground and shaking when it slammed into a post office parking lot and burst into flames.
Five people were killed, ranging in age from 15 to 59.
A sixth person survives and is listed in critical condition.
Three people were also injured on the ground.
On Saturday afternoon, a small plane crashed into a wooded area in New York’s Long Island.
Only the pilot was on board when it crashed about a mile south of the runway at Republic Airport.
The FAA says the pilot was on the final approach when he crashed.
New York State police are investigating but have not released the pilot’s condition.
On Friday morning at least twelve people were killed after a plane carrying 93 passengers and 5 crew members crashed shortly after takeoff near the city of Almaty in Kazakhstan.
The plane lost altitude after takeoff and broke through a concrete fence before colliding with a two-story building.
Data indicates the plane crashed 19 seconds after takeoff.
The plane did not catch fire following the crash, which aviation experts say may have played a factor in so many passengers surviving the initial impact.
And on Thursday a tour helicopter in Hawaii crashed in a remote area of a state park on the island of Kauai.
Officials were notified just after 6 PM that the chopper had failed to return, launching a multi agency search.
One pilot and six passengers were on board, two of those passengers are believed to be children.
The remains of six people have been recovered.
One person is still unaccounted for.
In all of the crashes, aviation authorities are investigating to determine probable cause of the accidents, including weather, mechanical failure, pilot error or criminal activity.
