It’s always been believed that you can calculate a dog’s age relative to humans by just multiplying by seven.
So a one-year-old would be seven-years-old in human years.
A two-year-old dog would be fourteen-years-old in human years.
But a new study published Thursday in Cell Systems suggested that’s not true because dogs and humans don’t age at the same rate.
In fact scientists found that the equation for a dog’s age is actually more complicated.
Researchers at the University of California, San Diego developed a new formula which is the logarithm of the dogs age multiplied by 16 plus 31.
For iPhone calculators, first input the dogs age.
Then click the natural logarithm or “ln” function.
Multiply that result by 16.
Then add 31.
That would mean a one-year-old dog is close to a 31-year-old human.
A five-year-old dog is similar to a 57-year-old human.
A 10-year-old dog is likened to a 68-year-old human.
Researchers based their equation on canine and human genomes after studying 104 Labrador retrievers.
My dog Jahlan is eight years old so based on the formula he is 64 years old in human years.
Old man.
